     Arunachalam muruganantham is a social entrepreneur and also he is the inventor of low cost sanitary pad making machine. Let's see briefs about him in this Article.

  • Arunachalam Muruganantham was born  in family of hand-loom weavers in Coimbatore, TamilNadu, India.

  • When Muruganantham was in childhood, his father died in a road accident. After his father’s disappearance , Muruganantham grown up in poverty.
  • To help him in his studies, his mother worked as a labourer in Farm.
  • * He was dropped out of his school, At the age of fourteen. 
  • For his living, he did many jobs like  farm labourer, a machine tool operator, a welder, etc.

  • He married his wife Shanthi in 1998, he noticed that his wife collecting newspapers and filthy rags to use as sanitary napkins during her menstrual cycle.
  • This incident made impact on Muruganantham to do something for her, and he started Making experimental pads.

  • At starting , he used  to make pads In Cotton, which were rejected by his wife and sisters and They also refused to be the test subjects for his innovations.
  • * He realized that there is a huge difference between the raw materials cost (10 paise, $0.002) and the end product (almost 40 times to the cost of raw materials).

  • Arunachalam Muruganantham looked for female volunteers to test his inventions, but most of them were too shy discussing their menstrual issues.


  • Also, he approached female students of his nearby medical college. As usual, that also didn't Work. 


  • Finally, he decided to test the inventions on himself. He created a “uterus” from an bladder and filling it with blood of goat. Muruganantham tested like ran, making a walk and cycling with the artificial uterus under his dress to test his sanitary pad’s absorption rates.



  • * The foul-rotten smell coming out of his dress led people boycotting him. Everyone thought he has some problem in Brain.
  • After 18 months, he again started the research for his wife, she left him, and after sometime his mother also left him. 
  • * In an interview, Muruganantham said:
  • He said in an Interview that “My wife gone, my mum gone, ostracised by my village” . “I was left all alone in -  'life'.” Still, he resumed his hardwork in making affordable sanitary pads for womens all over india.
  • The huge mystery for him was what sanitary pads were made of. Somehow, he came to know that it is made in cotton. Also , the cotton that he using, was totally different from the multinational companies.
  • As Muruganantham did not how to speak much English at that time, a college professor helped him in writing to the big manufacturing companies. In that thing, Muruganantham  spent almost 7,000 rupees on telephone calls.
  • * Finally, a Coimbatore-based textile mill owner pleased him some samples for knowing what it is . A few Months later, Muruganantham came to know that the real material used in making the sanitary pads is Cellulose, from the bark of a tree. It has taken him 2 years and 3 months to discover what the sanitary pads are made of.He know that the machine required to make sanitary pads out of this material cost thousands of dollars. He have also design his own.


  • After a 4 1/2  years of experiments, he came out with a low-cost method for the production of sanitary Pad.
  • His 1st trail was completely made of wood, and he showed it to the scientists of IIT Madras, they entered his machine in a competition for a National Innovation Award.

  • His model came first of all 943 entries. The  President of India, Pratibha Patil awarded him for his innovation.He has also awarded padma shri by the president of India pranab mukherjee.

  • Suddenly, Muruganantham's life became appresative and Highspeed , after 5-and-a-half years, he received a call from his wife, Shanthi.
  • * He founded Jayaashree Industries, which now markets low-cost sanitary napkin making machines to all womens all over the India. 
  • Muruganantham’s primary concern is that Indian thinks that it is a taboo Topic about menstruation.  women can’t visit public places and temples, they are not permitted to touch the water supply or cooking. In fact, women's are treated as untouchables.

  • * He built 250 machines in 18 months and took out them to the most under developed and poorest states in India- the so-called BIMARU states (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh).
  • A manual machine costs around 75,000 Indian currency .while a semi-automated machine costs more than the manual machine .




  • Each and Every machine gives employment for 10 women's and also converts 3,000 women to pad usage. Each machine Has a productivity of making 200-250 pads a day, which sells for an average of 2.5 rupees.
  • His mission was not only just to make affordable sanitary pads, but also to create jobs for rural women.
  • * Initially, his aim was to make one million jobs for poor women, now, he aims 10 million jobs worldwide.
  • Muruganantham has expanded it to 106 countries across the World including Mauritius, Kenya, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.



  • He has become well known as a social entrepreneur and also he has given lectures at many prestigious institutions including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIT Bombay and Harvard.

  • * Muruganantham has also appeared as a speaker at TED Talks with Gates. 

     * In November 2016, film actress and interior designer Twinkle Khanna, published a book Named as ‘The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad,’ which was inspired by Arunachalam Muruganantham.

       * An Bollywood film in 2007, “Padman,” was based on Muruganantham’s story with some change, In which Akshay kumar casted for the role of Arunachalam Muruganantham (as Lakshmikant Chauhan).

  • Muruganantham now lives with his family in an modest apartment🏘.He does not like an luxury life.He says that he has no desire in fortunes “If you get rich, you have an apartment🏬 with an extra bedroom and then you die” means his simplicity.
